About Ethiopian Securities Exchange (ESX)

ESX is Ethiopia’s first, and only organized securities exchange. ESX is established as a public private partnership in line with Article 31 of the Capital Market Proclamation (No.1248/2021).

ESX operates the business of a securities exchange, functions as a Self-Regulatory Organization (“SRO”) and serves as the central market organizer providing an integrated product suite covering the equities, fixed income, and money market segments of the capital markets.

As the pioneer securities exchange, ESX aims to play a critical role in the development and growth of the Ethiopian capital markets. ESX’s core objective is to facilitate access to capital and support effective capital allocation in a manner that supports Ethiopia’s economic growth. By developing a well-regulated and efficient capital market ecosystem, ESX will enable mobilization of financial resources for both public and private sector institutions while providing investors a reliable platform to invest in a reliable and efficient environment.

Ethiopian Securities Exchange would like to invite qualified and interested job seekers to apply for the following different vacant position.

Position 1: Senior Manager-Trading and Operations

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of ESX markets, including trading activities, order processing, trade settlement, and clearing processes.
  • Develop, maintain, implement comprehensive operational frameworks and policies governing trading operations of ESX.
  • Facilitate fair, orderly, and transparent markets across ESX trading environments, enforcing operating rules/procedures, and supporting market participants.
  • Monitor market volatility, liquidity, and other risk factors to safeguard the stability of the exchange.
  • Monitor and update operational procedures and risk controls and meet internal and external audit requirements.
  • Continuously improve trading workflows, settlement processes, and operational efficiency, identify bottlenecks and streamline procedures, implement best practices for trade operations.
  • Become very familiar with and collaborate with the Central Securities Depository (CSD) system to ensure seamless integration of the end-to-end transaction cycle.
  • Stay informed about relevant regulations and ensure compliance with exchange rules.
  • Coordinate with legal and compliance teams to address any regulatory changes.
  • Prepare reports for regulatory authorities as required.
  • Collaborate with trading members, and other stakeholders to resolve any trade-related issues.
  • Collaborate with the technology team to enhance and optimize trading systems and infrastructure, identify opportunities for innovation and efficiency improvements in market operations.
  • Collaborate with risk, compliance, and surveillance officers by signaling and alerting on performance issues and anomalies or irregularities in trading behavior and market trends, as well as issues with trading members behavior and conduct.
  • Engage and service a diverse range of stakeholders inclusive of brokers, dealers, CSD, custodians, system vendors etc.
  • Manage the generation, synthesis and dissemination of market information and data to relevant market participants and the general public.
  • Help lead in developing data products and related policies, assisting in the management of key data clients and upselling data products to 3rd party vendors.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Finance, Economics, Statistics, Data Science, Business Administration, Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in related field – with operational and system related tasks/mandates.

Competency requirements:

  • Exposure to relational database systems (e.g., Oracle SQL, PostgreSQL) and structures is a plus.
  • Knowledge of capital markets regulatory framework
  • Experience in operating in a high intensity working environment.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data, trends, and market dynamics.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse stakeholders, including senior management, licensed trading members, and regulatory authorities.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Position 2: – Senior Manager-Trading Members Regulation and Supervision

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, maintain, implement comprehensive regulatory frameworks and policies governing trading member activities on the ESX.
  • Facilitate the onboarding process for new trading members, providing them with necessary information and training.
  • Monitor and evaluate trading member compliance with regulatory requirements set under the Capital Market Proclamation 1248/202, ECMA Directives and ESX Rules, including but not limited to trading rules, capital adequacy, risk management, and conduct standards.
  • Assist in interpreting exchange rules and policies for member firms.
  • Work closely with member firms to enhance market efficiency and resolve operational issues.
  • Conduct regular inspections, audits, and assessments of trading members to ensure adherence to regulatory standards and best practices.
  • Investigate and respond to complaints, incidents, and potential violations of trading rules or regulations by trading members.
  • Collaborate with regulatory authorities and industry organizations to stay abreast of regulatory developments, emerging risks, and best practices in market supervision.
  • Provide guidance and support to trading members on regulatory compliance matters, including interpretation of rules and regulations.
  • Support the delivery of continuous operational and process improvements and efficiencies.
  • Develop and deliver training programs and workshops to enhance trading member understanding and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Analyze market data, trends, and trading patterns to identify potential market abuses, manipulation, or irregularities.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and recommendations for senior management, regulatory authorities, and other stakeholders on regulatory compliance and market supervision matters.
  • Participate in industry working groups, committees, and forums to contribute expertise and insights on market supervision and regulatory issues.
  • Perform other tasks assigned to him/her from time to time.

Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, Law, or a related field.

Minimum of 8 years of experience in related field.

Position 3: – Listing and Reporting Senior Analyst

Duties and Responsibilities of the role:

  • Review applications and/or proposals made by issuers for listing (assessing prospectus/offering memorandum and other listing documents) manage transactions and/or further actions where appropriate; communicate decisions to issuers and/or advisors, including auditors and legal counsel.
  • Handle pre-IPO and pre-listing enquiries by issuers before filing of listing applications as well as support prospective issuers and advisors on listing related matters.
  • Support the supervising manager(s), ESX Board of Directors, and other relevant market committees in relation to decisions on listing applications.
  • Supervise compliance of issuers with the listing and reporting rules and procedures of the Exchange and other applicable laws and regulations
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of listing applications and files in a centralized database.
  • Oversee the timely and accurate release of information to the public.
  • Review disclosure documents to ensure compliance with relevant financial reporting and other standards.
  • Handle complaints against listed companies and enquiries and requests for clarification of the application of the Listing Rules by listed companies and service providers.
  • Conduct macro-economic, sectoral, industry, firm level research and general equity capital market research with an emphasis to link this to the overarching listing strategy of the Exchange.
  • Produce high quality and compelling research material for use in listing presentations and marketing materials.
  • Support in implementing strategic initiatives and policies where appropriate.
  • Engage in issuer preparation, market development, advocacy, investor education events.
  • Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with potential issuers and listed companies.
  • Act as a primary point of contact for listed companies, addressing inquiries and providing guidance on reporting and compliance matters.
  • Undertaking other tasks as required from time to time.

Qualification Required: 

Must Haves:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business Administration, Management, or other relevant fields of study.
  • At least five (5) years of hands-on experience in the financial analysis, investigation or auditing or in related field
  • Strong experience in a financial reporting framework i.e IFRS
  • Prior experience in investment banking, capital market activities, or in financial advisory is an advantage.

Position 4: – Strategy and Program Manager

Key Responsibilities:

  • Proactively leads the design, delivery and deployment of strategic programs that support ESX’s roadmap and strategic direction.
  • Develop new solutions, practices and strategies to support long-term business growth
  • Ensure broader strategies are translated into actionable programs and initiatives aligned to the mission and vision of the company
  • Prepare for and interface with advisors, clients and the public regarding macro research recommendations and analysis for the design and implementation of strategic plan.
  • Design, oversee and manage multiple projects.
  • Ensuring completion of programs on schedule and budget in pursuit of delivering business outcome.
  • Evaluate the development of project level and consolidated analysis to monitor the achievement of ESX’s overall strategy.
  • Monitor program progress and alignment between technology, operations and business needs along with resources.
  • Conduct comprehensive stakeholder analysis for complex strategic programs.
  • Prepare, measure, evaluate, communicate, report the periodic plans.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans to achieve company objectives and drive long-term growth in the capital market sector.
  • Conduct comprehensive market research and analysis to identify emerging trends, competitive threats, and growth opportunities.
  • Identify and design mitigation plan with the necessary department to risks that could impact programs and overall plan
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define project scope, objectives, and deliverables for key initiatives.
  • Lead the execution of strategic programs, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and timelines.
  • Establish KPIs and performance metrics to measure the success of strategic initiatives and track progress towards targets.
  • Provide regular updates and reports to the Chief Market Development Officer on the status of projects, including any risks or obstacles encountered.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to optimize operational processes and enhance overall efficiency.
  • Foster a culture of innovation and collaboration within the organization, encouraging team members to contribute ideas and solutions.

Qualification Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Finance, Economics, or related field.
  • Minimum of 8 years proven experience in strategic planning, program management, or consulting roles preferably within the financial services industry.

Competency Requirements:

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data sets and draw actionable insights.
  • Strong knowledge of econometrics, empirical finance and macroeconomics.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, including the ability to motivate and inspire teams to achieve common goals.
  • Proficiency in project management tools and techniques, with a track record of successfully managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strategic thinker with a results-driven mindset and a passion for driving organizational change and innovation.
  • A background in capital markets would be an added benefit.
