The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was founded in 1970 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations seconded by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. The Institute got its name from the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae).
AHRI reorganized by the decree of the Council of Minister’s Regulation No. 376/2016 as biomedical research, clinical trial and research capacity building under the Federal Ministry of Health. AHRI, over its 50 years in service, is well known for its hub function for skill and technology transfer and partnership embracing research agendas with direct impact in the development and transformation of population in Ethiopia and beyond.
Position 1: Junior Researcher -Public Health / Medical Laboratory or Health Informatics
Qualifications:
- BSc Degree in Public Health, Medical Laboratory, Health Informatics or related fields from a recognized university.
- Minimum CGPA of 3.00 for male and 2.75 for female applicants
- Zero year work experience
Skills and Competencies Required
Language Skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in the local language of the respective duty station:
- Abobo/Gambela – Agnuak
- Mizan – Benchigna
- Maksegnit – Amharic
- Excellent oral and written proficiency in English
Terms of employment: 4 – 6 Month contract periods with full time employment basis with possibility of extension based on performance and budget availability.
Salary: As per the Institution scale
Duty station: South west Ethiopia Region (Mizan), Gambela Region (Abobo/Gambela), and Amhara Region (Maksegnit),
Applicants may apply for only one duty station: Maksegnit or Mizan or Abobo (Gambela).

Position 2: Assistant Researcher/Study Nurse
Essential Skills and Experience
- BSc/MSc degree in Nursing or any health-related field with a minimum GPA of 2.75 for Females and 3.00 for Males and a minimum of 2 year of clinical experience.
- Training in clinical management of TB
- Phlebotomy and Cord blood collection and other related clinical skills
- Experience in clinical research, maternal health, or TB-related studies is an asset.
- Knowledge of research ethics, GCP, and biological sample handling is desirable.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
- Tolerance to doing routine tasks at a health facility level
- Strong coordination and organizational skills
- Attention to detail for quality data record and documentation.
- Ability to maintain study confidentiality.
- Training in GCP/GCLP and quality control/assurance (preferred)
- Experience in nursing/health-related field
Personal Attributes:
- Personal training/skills in the required position
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills and proficient English skills
- Strong computer literacy (MS Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and internet use)
- Strong organizational skills
- A high level of attention to details
- Ability to work with others/teamwork, including international collaborators.
- Open for discussion and learning
- Ability to problem-solving
- Well organized; flexible to working off-working hours or weekends as needed.
- Willingness to take up additional responsibilities and continuous training as needed
