The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was established in 1970 by Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations, with support from the Ethiopian Ministry of Health. It was named after Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who discovered the leprosy bacillus. AHRI was recently reorganized as a biomedical research and clinical trial center under the Federal Ministry of Health. The institute has played a key role in transferring skills and technology and partnering on research projects with direct impact on Ethiopia’s population. One of its departments, the Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases Research Division, has received a grant from the European Union to collaborate on a project called “Serological Testing And Treatment For P. Vivax,” which includes a mobile-technology supported intervention.

Armauer Hansen Research Inistitute (AHRI) would like to invites competent and interested candidates for the following Positions.

Position 1: Junior Researcher (Public Health)

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan and conduct data collection, data entry and data cleaning activities
  • Prompt response to the requests from project coordinator, manager, local data collectors and the field staff·
  • Coordinate activities at the field site
  • Responsible for accurately completing records and reports from field and support in coordination of data collection.
  • Preparing project specific data collection instruments, data handling and sharing platforms
  • Maintain data integration and sharing, data mining and analysis and quality assurance project data
  • Participate on report write up and manuscript development
  • Compile the necessary documents of internationally purchased laboratory supplies, consumables and equipment.
  • Perform other duties when assigned by PIs and Researchers

Qualifications:

  • BSc Degree in Public Health or Health informatics fields from a recognized university.
  • Minimum CGPA of 3.00 for male and 2.75 for female applicants
  • Willingness to work at the field site

Other Competencies:

  • Fluency in English Language
  • Experience on data management tools such as ODK, RedCap, etc
  • Microscopic based malaria diagnostics
  • Strong computer literacy (MS office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and internet use)
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skill
  • Capacity to work under pressure and manage personal stress levels
  • Ability to work with others/team work, including international collaborators
  • Prior experience with donor-funded projects
  • Willingness to be multi-tasked in laboratory, admin, finance, and logistics
  • Willingness to take up out of office tasks

Duty station: Addis Ababa with frequent travel to the study sites (Shashemene Zuria Wereda, Wondo Wereda, Arsi Negelle Wereda and their rural Kebeles) and stay for months in the field.

Work Experience: zero year work experience.

Number required: 4 (Four)

Salary: ETB 10,386.00

Terms of employment: one year contract period with full time employment basis with possibility of extension based on performance and budget availability

Position 2: Junior Researcher (Medical Laboratory Technologist)

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collect human blood samples, including performing phlebotomy and conducting home visits to patients and conduct routine laboratory investigations for patients.
  • Conduct RDT test, Hemoglobin measurement, preparing thin and thick blood film, perform microscopic examination, and performing Dried Blood Spot (DBS) preparation
  • Communicate to field coordinator and file reports while ensuring confidentiality
  • Process specimens in the field laboratories and do follow up of patients as required
  • Transport the collected samples to central laboratory by maintaining proper handling of samples
  • Maintain quality control of specimen samples
  • Organize and store all chemicals substances, fluids and compressed gases according to safety instructions.
  • Ensure hygiene and sterilization criteria, including universal precautions, are met; manage waste as per good laboratory practices.
  • Ensure biomedical equipment is in good working order by using in accordance with user manual and protocols, perform cleaning and minor maintenance and alert supervisor in case of malfunctioning
  • Ensure appropriate requisition and consumption of field and lab supplies to maintain departmental inventory levels
  • Ensure that laboratory practices are conducted with the highest level of integrity and ethics according to professional Code of Conduct
  • Ensure direct reports have clear objectives, receive mentorship and participate in capacity building opportunities.
  • Respect research participants writes and ensure confidentiality of their information
  • Plan and conduct real-time data capturing, data cleaning and entry activities
  • Conduct Molecular and Serological based diagnostic lab activities
  • Ensure standards and the quality of laboratory procedures by strictly following the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Adhere to biosafety measures adopted in the laboratory, minding the safety of oneself and others.
  • Facilitate and maintain the established system of organized record keeping and information management for timely delivery of results, data collection, analysis and reporting for laboratory monitoring and facilitation to operational research.
  • Prompt response to the requests from project coordinator, manager, local data collectors and the study participants
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications required

 Education, Licenses and Certifications:

  • BSc or MSc Degree in Medical Laboratory Science/Technology from a recognized university
  • Valid Professional license is required.
  • Training in Laboratory Quality Management System is an added advantage
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in a similar role is required
  • Experience working in a research institute is an added advantage.
  • Minimum CGPA of 3.00 for male and 2.75 for female applicants
  • Experience in field travel is an added advantage
  • Experience driving an ambulance and working with an international NGO is an added advantage

Other Competencies:

  • Microscopic based malaria diagnostics
  • Strong computer literacy (MS office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and internet use)
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skill
  • Capacity to work under pressure and manage personal stress levels
  • Ability to work with others/team work, including international collaborators

  • Skilled in performing routine laboratory investigations and interpreting results.
  • Good communication skills, with good command of written and spoken English.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of patient information and test results.
  • Knowledge of hygiene management and IPC protocol

Salary: ETB 10,386.00

Terms of employment: one year contract period with full time employment basis with possibility of extension based on performance and budget availability

Position 3: Assistant Researcher (Public Health)

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan and conduct data collection, data entry and data cleaning activities
  • Prompt response to the requests from project coordinator, manager, local data collectors and the field staff·
  • Coordinate the sample transportation, handling and storage from the site to the lab centers as well as in the lab centers
  • Coordinate data/sample collection activities at the field site
  • Responsible for accurately completing records and reports from field and support in coordination of data collection
  • Communicate with stakeholders around the study area and create conducive ground for the study
  • Coordinate and manage the field team, field assistants and collaborators at the field
  • Request field work and sample collection supplies timely, receive and ensure proper utilization
  • Preparing project specific data collection instruments, data handling and sharing platforms
  • Maintain data integration and sharing, data mining and analysis and quality assurance project data
  • Participate on report write up and manuscript development
  • Compile the necessary documents of internationally purchased laboratory supplies, consumables and equipment.

Position 4: Junior Researcher (Entomologist)

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct membrane feeding experiment of mosquitoes
  • Maintain mosquito colonies in the insectary.
  • Conduct the feeding of lab animals and mosquito colony.
  • Collect and manage immature mosquitoes from field sites and rear them in the laboratory
  • Ensure and coordinate the cleaning of the insectary
  • Monitor mosquito feeding behavior, physiology, feeding biology
  • Responsible for field entomology activities and related laboratory work
  • Establish regularly the needs required for the insectary.
  • Ensure the appropriate storage of equipment and animal food.
  • Ensure appropriate records are kept in the laboratory log books.
  • Assist with procurement requests related to this activity.
  • Prepare Standard Operating Procedures and adhere to the SOPs for these activities.
  • Participate in other field activities as required.
  • Perform any other duty assigned by the Entomology Coordinator (as applicable) and Project coordinator.
  • Work closely with researchers, data management team and lab logistics officers

Qualifications Required:

  • BSc Degree in Biology or Biotechnology from a recognized university with zero year work experience.
  • Experience in mosquito collection and rearing is an added advantage
  • Minimum GPA of 3.00 for male and 2.75 for female

Other Competencies:

  • Microscopic based malaria diagnostics
  • Strong computer literacy (MS office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and internet use)
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skill
  • Capacity to work under pressure and manage personal stress levels

  • Skilled in performing routine entomology experiments and interpreting results.
