British Embassy Addis Ababa would like to invites competent and interested candidates for the following Positions.

Position 1: Conflict Adviser (Maternity Cover)

Essential qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Relevant experience working on conflict, peacebuilding, gender, human rights and/or development issues in Ethiopia preferably at national and regional level with evidence of understanding of key policies and strategies.
  • A minimum of a Master’s degree or equivalent level of academic and professional experience in a subject area clearly related to conflict issues.
  • Ability to explain complex issues in clear English to a range of audiences.
  • Experience in influencing policies at senior levels.
  • Demonstrable experience of working with the international development community and an understanding/familiarity with the international development architecture.
  • A proven ability to communicate clearly and confidently, verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent inter-personal and team working skills, with an ability to work flexibly and adapt to emerging issues.
  • Language requirements: Advanced written and spoken level of English and Amharic
  • Desirable qualifications, skills and experience :
  • Previously most successful candidates have drawn on 5+ years of relevant experience to show sufficient evidence of the competencies etc.
  • Demonstrable experience of leadership and team management.

Salary: USD 1,603.08 /month

Position 2: Assistant Programme Officer (16/23 ADD)

Essential qualifications, skills and experience 

  • Ability to organise and prioritise own work and deal with a number of matters simultaneously avoiding backlogs of work.
  • Ability to take responsibility for quality of work, and able to correct and learn from errors.
  • Ability to identify and resolve minor work problems, for example in the checking and payment of invoices.
  • Computer literate and familiar with basic features and use of various financial programs
  • Able to create and use simple spreadsheets.
  • Able to create clear and accurate first drafts of project documentation, correspondence, and minutes or notes of meetings.
  • Able to listen well and communicate effectively with colleagues in British Embassy and externally.

Position 3: Deputy Programme Manager (15/23 ADD)

Essential qualifications, skills and experience 

  • Excellent project management skills.
  • The ability to work effectively in a team and deliver through others.
  • A proven ability to quickly get up to speed with new organisational systems and processes.
  • Solid networking, communications and influencing skills.
  • An ability to represent the British Embassy effectively with interlocutors such as government officials and donor representatives.
  • Sound organisational skills to respond, in a timely and accurate fashion, to disparate requests for information on our programme.
  • Accuracy, attention to detail and a proven ability to accurately forecast and manage expenditure.
  • An understanding of how the donor structure in Ethiopia operates and how the British Embassy can have best effect this environment.
  • An understanding of the importance of demonstrating value for money and results.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience 

Knowledge and understanding of international aid

Able to access, critically appraise and use evidence, demonstrating skills in the following areas

  • Understand a range of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies including the application of basic statistical methods
  • Critically appraise* and assess the quality of published research and other potential sources of evidence.
  • Interpretation, use and presentation of data and evidence in defining policy and practice
  • Comprehension of key concepts from social and cultural analysis and basic understanding of the use and application of political economy analysis
  • Competent in applying best practice in evaluation design, using a range of rigorous methods, and ensuring high standards of independence and quality
  • Ability to design, commission and manage evaluations including rigorous impact evaluations, with appropriate technical support, in line with FCDO standards
  • Familiarity with the core concepts underpinning FCDO’s approach to results

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including strong organizational skills; able to work under pressure and manage multiple work streams.
  • Experience in Programme and Financial management; including understanding of Procurement Processes of complex projects.
  • Desirable qualifications, skills and experience 
  • Willingness to work in high paced environment. Willing to learn and grow.
  • Experience in engaging and influencing external partners and managing suppliers.

Position 5: Monitoring and Evaluation Project Officer (13/23 ADD)

Essential qualifications, skills and experience 

  • Degree qualification or equivalent experience
  • Previous experience in project monitoring and evaluation, including use of logical framework, indicators, evidence and data collection and evaluation protocols
  • Some experience of qualitative and/or quantitative evaluation methods including data analysis
  • Experience in drafting briefing papers, reports and presentations to a high level
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills on complex matters, often requiring persuasion and influence
  • Effective organisation, prioritisation and planning skills
  • Ability to analyse and interpret information and recommend appropriate actions
  • Ability to work on own initiative and organise own workload without supervision working to tight and often changing timescales.
  • Adaptability, flexibility and ability to cope with uncertainty and change
  • An understanding of and commitment to equality of opportunity and good working relationships

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Further training in monitoring and evaluation
  • Understanding of global best practice in monitoring and evaluation techniques
  • Understanding of global health including the health challenges of low- and middle-income countries and the international health architecture
  • Computer literate and proficient user of Microsoft programs such as Outlook, Word, Excel and SharePoint. 
  • Experience in the use of qualitative evaluation software will be advantageous
