The main explanation for the establishment of the university is the government’s commitment to the quality of higher education and the rational distribution of higher education in the country.
Based on these coordinating explanations, the foundation stone was laid on May 9, 2005 by His Excellency Genet Zewde, Minister of Education of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
Subsequently, the construction of the university was handed over to Debre Berhan City Administration on 102 hectares of land.
The University’s initial enrollment capacity (January 2007, but enrollment has grown significantly to 29,304 regular, extension, distance and continuity as well as summer students enrolled in 53 classes / programs in ten colleges, 43 regular postgraduate and 2 PhD programs.
Miraculously to its being young, the management fervently and zealously envisions to become one of the best universities in Ethiopia by 2020 G.C.
As such, it is committed to continuing its institutional capacity in producing qualified graduates, conducting problem-solving research and providing community service, and is committed to sustaining a wide range of organizational activities in human resource development and construction.
The university currently has more than 1286 (undergraduate to tertiary) academic staff (524 under study) and 1181 administrative staff technicians. In 2012 EC / 2020, the university’s enrollment capacity has grown to 17,000 regular academic trainees and it will be done to improve the staff level and work as planned.
