Four separate businesses in the sea transport industry merged to form the Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics Service Enterprise. These were Dry Port Enterprise, Ethiopian Maritime and Transit Service Enterprise, and Ethiopian Shipping Lines Share Company; and the previous Comet Transport Share Company, which was merged into the new business in August 2016
The former Ethiopian Shipping Lines Share Company (ESL), which was established on March 1, 1956 E.C. with a capital of 50,000 (fifty thousand) Ethiopian birr, is one of the major businesses that has contributed to the formation of the new merger. The foundation for Ethiopia’s modern sea transport was laid by this establishment. The American Towrus Investment held 51%, the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia held 51%, and the Ministry of Finance held 49% of the capital share when the shipping line was established. After some time had passed, ESL’s capital was increased to 375,000 (three hundred seventy thousand Birr). The Queen of Sheba, Lion of Judea, and Lalibella were the three ships built by the company at this time. As a result, one can infer that the company commercialized its service operation in 1956 E.C. with the construction of these three ships.
With the acquisitions of the ships Adulis (1959 E.C.), Tana Hayke (1960 E.C.), and Ashenge (1961), the Enterprise has established itself as the best modern sea transport provider.
