India and Ethiopia Strengthen Counter-Terrorism Cooperation

In a significant diplomatic engagement, India and Ethiopia have taken a step forward in reinforcing bilateral ties with a focus on counter-terrorism cooperation. During the visit, the Indian delegation held substantive discussions with Ethiopian lawmakers, senior government officials, and representatives of the African Union Commission. These meetings underscored a mutual recognition of terrorism as a shared threat and a commitment to enhancing cooperation in intelligence sharing, capacity building, and policy alignment.

MP Supriya Sule highlighted India’s growing engagement with Africa as part of its broader foreign policy objectives and reiterated New Delhi’s long-standing support for peace, stability, and development across the continent. She emphasized that Ethiopia, being a strategic partner and a key political hub through the African Union, plays a vital role in regional security dynamics.

The two countries discussed possible joint training programs, counter-radicalization efforts, and regional security dialogues, with India offering to share its extensive experience in counter-terrorism strategies, cyber security, and border control mechanisms.

Ethiopian officials, for their part, welcomed the partnership and stressed the importance of collective action in addressing transnational security challenges. They noted Ethiopia’s own experiences with insurgency and cross-border threats and expressed interest in adopting more technology-driven approaches to counter-terrorism.

The African Union Commission also played a key role in the dialogue, reflecting the broader continental interest in forging alliances to address terrorism, which continues to plague parts of East and West Africa.

Analysts view this development as part of India’s broader diplomatic push into Africa through platforms such as India-Africa Forum Summits, trade missions, and security dialogues. Ethiopia, as a gateway to East Africa and a rising regional power, is seen as a pivotal partner in India’s efforts to expand influence and promote mutual security.

This visit follows an ongoing trend of Ethiopia strengthening security ties with various international partners to confront threats posed by extremist groups, cyber attacks, and transnational organized crime.

As these bilateral ties grow, both nations stand to benefit from increased political trust, strategic coordination, and knowledge exchange—key ingredients in building a safer, more resilient global community.
