LifeWater International would like to invites competent and interested candidates for the following position.

Position: Senior Engineering Advisor

Position Overview:

The Senior Engineering Advisor is responsible for supporting the Director of Engineering and Sustainability, Global WASH Engineer, and the Engineering Managers as they design and implement water and sanitation infrastructure as part of Lifewater’s Vision of a Healthy Village program. The Senior Engineering Advisor supports the development of new water and sanitation infrastructure strategy components and training resources. They work closely with Engineering Managers and Global WASH Engineer in developing engineering and construction plans and advise engineering staff as they encounter technical challenges during implementation. The Senior Engineering Advisor will focus on the following areas:

Engineering Design and Quality

  • Support the design of Lifewater’s water and sanitation infrastructure strategy, including engineering and construction standards, standard drawings and bills of quantities, and water and sanitation infrastructure sustainability strategies
  • Support efforts in technological advancement in water and sanitation infrastructure to best serve remote communities, schools, and health centers
  • Support Engineering Managers and Engineering Team Leaders as they supervise contractors conducting groundwater assessment, hydrogeological and geophysical survey; review and advise Engineering Managers and Engineering Team Leaders as they analyze and interpret hydrogeological and geophysical survey reports
  • Review and advise on the standards, design, and installation of complex water systems
  • Identify areas for improvement within the Vision of a Healthy Village engineering strategy and implementation processes; work with the Global Programs Team to make adjustments as needed to increase impact
  • Support Engineering Managers and Engineering Team Leaders as they develop engineering and construction plans; review and advise on engineering and construction plans as these are being developed, helping Engineering Managers and Engineering Team Leaders with these documents prior to Director review and approval; facilitate the ID assignment and update Lifewater systems with the approved engineering and construction plans

Engineering Implementation

  • Support Engineering Managers and Engineering Team Leaders as they supervise contractors drilling boreholes, pump testing, and surface completion; review and advise Engineering Managers and Engineering Team Leader as they manage drilling contracts 
  • Advise engineering staff, including DrillCo, as they encounter technical challenges during implementation
  • Verify engineering and construction completion mWater reports and share completion results with relevant staff
  • Update Lifewater systems with results and status information
  • Advise on engineering and construction contracts, negotiations, and costs, when needed

Capacity Building

  • Develop and manage engineering training resources, processes, and guidelines, in collaboration with the Director of Engineering and Sustainability and Global WASH Engineer
  • Prepare for and lead engineering-related training and capacity building sessions, in collaboration with Engineering Managers and Global WASH Engineer
  • Other Requirements
  • Support water and sanitation infrastructure monitoring and evaluation efforts and research studies
  • Support the development of new engineering-related materials and curricula; oversee the rollout of new materials and curricula
  • Support on sharing learnings from Lifewater’s work in public spheres (e.g., learning groups, conferences, or journal articles)
  • Provide additional support to Engineering Managers, Global WASH Engineer and Director of Engineering and Sustainability when needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Reports to: Director of Engineering and Sustainability

Team: Global Programs

Location: Preferably Ethiopia, but open to candidates located in Uganda, Tanzania, Cambodia and the United States

Status: Full time, Exempt

Work Experience and Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Adherence to Lifewater’s statement of faith
  • Passion for Lifewater’s mission of serving vulnerable communities and children
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Civil or Environmental Engineering or in related field
  • Background in hydrogeology/geology with experience in groundwater resource investigation, geophysical measurement and data interpretation, groundwater potential zone mapping, hydrogeological mapping, and groundwater modelling
  • Strong knowledge of hydrogeological mapping and groundwater modeling using ArcGIS/ArcGIS Pro software, hydraulic modelling using WaterCAD/WaterGEMS/Epanet
  • 6+ years of experience in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programs
  • Detailed knowledge of current approaches to design and construction of small-scale and large scale community water and sanitation facilities, with experience in assessing and planning water, sanitation, and hygiene promotion at the grass-roots level
  • Extensive knowledge of appropriate technology, water quality, WASH industry, and best practices in Christian community development
  • Proven ability to work closely and develop strong relationships cross-culturally with others
  • International travel to program areas 1-2 times per year
  • Legally eligible to work in Ethiopia; no sponsorship will be provided

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post graduate degree in hydrogeology/geology or in related field
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE), if based in the US
  • Experience using project management software, such as Asana

Physical Qualifications

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
