Position 1: Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Consultant
Job Description:
Winrock is seeking a WASH Consultant to support the Solarizing Community Water in Ethiopia. The purpose of the project is to demonstrate a lease-to-own model for community solar water pumping in rural, off-grid communities. The project will demonstrate the lease-to-own model over a three-year period by facilitating solar water pump replacement by private developers in ten pilot communities.
Position Description:
The WASH Consultant will collect information and evaluate community water supply systems in four (4) communities in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. The WASH Consultant will prepare a report on the existing water supply systems and recommendations, if any, for improvement to the systems to provide a clean and adequate supply of drinking water.
Essential Responsibilities:
(1 day) Review information on existing community water supply systems provided by the Winrock team, including supply source (e.g., spring, borehole), water demand calculation estimates, water quality test results, baseline survey instrument, solar pump sizing, and calculations of the volume of water being used (both in our 4 target communities, and in 3 communities in North Mecha that received donated solar water pumps)
(8 days) Visit each of the 4 targeted communities to collect supplemental data on existing water supply systems and sources that will be used to identify system constraints and deficiencies for providing an adequate supply of clean drinking water.
1. Assess whether there is adequate protection of the water source
2. Conduct a visual inspection of the water supply system to confirm Dabus Consult’s findings
3. Confirm the existing water treatment protocol – type of chemicals, dosing schedule
4. Review the volume of water per person per day currently being provided by the diesel pump, and the volume to be provided by the new solar pump
(6 days) Prepare a brief report describing bullets 1-4 above, including recommendations for improvements based on identified deficiencies and anticipated community needs. The report should include photos, schematics, and/or calculations to support recommendations. Prepare draft version and final version incorporating comments on the draft. Suggested report headings:
Introduction
Water demand estimates (by community)
Recommendations for any changes in the total water volume to be supplied to the community, and/or how the community may be able to afford an increase in their utilization of pumped water
- Status of current conditions (by community)
- Water supply infrastructure
- Water source(s) and source protection
- Established water treatment methods and protocols, and actual practices in the community, if they differ
- Recommendations for repairs and improvement to the existing system, if any (by community)
LOCATION: Amhara Region, Ethiopia
ORGANIZATION: Winrock International
REPORTS TO: Jennifer Holthaus, Associate Director, Clean Energy
LEVEL OF EFFORT: Approximately 15 Days
DURATION: November 13, 2023 – December 15, 2024
Job Requirements:
- The successful candidate will have the following qualifications and skills:
- University degree in Civil Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, Environmental Science, or equivalent relevant area.
- At least 8 years of related work experience in water/sanitary engineering, WASH, or a related field.
- Experience addressing gender and social inclusion within WASH projects.
- Willingness and ability to travel to rural areas in Amhara state.
- Thorough understanding of the WASH sector, including experience working with rural community water supply systems.
- Excellent communication and writing skills in English and Amharic.
- Refer consultants based in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.
- Specific experience with solar water pumping projects is required
