Background
The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was established in 1970 through the drive of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children associations backed by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia.

AHRI was laid out as a biomedical exploration establishment situated close to the All Africa Leprosy Rehabilitation and Training Hospital (ALERT). The Institute joined the Ethiopian Ministry of Health in 2004.
