Position 1: Senior Qualitative Researcher
The Role of the Senior Qualitative Researcher
The successful applicant will be responsible for qualitative and community engagement aspects of the HOPE project.
Principal responsibilities:
- Work closely with project investigators to plan and implement the qualitative and community engagement activities for HOPE project in Ethiopia.
- Carry out participant observation in Addis Ababa amongst people who are homeless and have mental health conditions.
- Conduct in-depth interviews with key stakeholders.
- Analyse and write up findings as manuscripts to be submitted for publication.
- Co-facilitate meetings with the community advisory board.
- Plan and support other community engagement activities.
- Work closely with the lived experience lead to ensure meaningful participation.
- Additional tasks as directed by the Head of the Center or study investigators.
Terms and conditions
Number required: One
Salary: Negotiable depending on qualifications and experience.
Hours of Work: Are governed by the laws of Ethiopia. However, the nature of the work is such that it might require working overtime and weekends, with due financial compensation.
Holidays: Are governed by the rules of Addis Ababa University for project workers.
Length of Contract: This is a fixed term position for 9 months.
Probationary Period and Notice Period: There is a three-month probationary period for this role. The notice period is one month.
Reports to: CDT-Africa Center Lead
Essential requirements
- PhD in health-related or social science-related field, with thesis.
- First author publications of qualitative research in reputable journals.
- Experience of conducting ethnographic research in Ethiopia.
- Proficient with qualitative data analysis.
- Experience with community engagement activities in Ethiopia.
- Experience working with international collaborators.
- Discretion and ability to handle confidential and sensitive information.
- Strong administrative, interpersonal and organisational skills.
- Involvement in advocacy or policy engagement highly desirable.
Personal attributes
- Well organised.
- A high level of attention to detail.
- Ability to work with others, including international collaborators
- Excellent English language, communication and organizational skills

Position 2: Research Assistant
The Role of the Research Assistant
The successful applicant will be responsible for carrying out research activities for the HOPE project
Principal responsibilities:
- Work closely with the Principal Investigator and project co-ordinator to carry out research activities
- Supervise the field co-coordinators.
- Take the lead in planning and overseeing the quantitative data collection
- Contribute to qualitative data collection
- Carry out data quality checks in the field
- Lead on data cleaning.
- Ensure safeguarding protocols are implemented in the field.
- Monitor quality of the intervention implementation.
- Contribute to papers using data from HOPE.
- Involvement in research dissemination activities.
- Additional tasks as directed by the Head of the Center or study investigators.

Position 3: Project Coordinator/Research Uptake Lead
The Role of the Project Co-ordinator
The successful applicant will be responsible for co-ordinating the HOPE project in Ethiopia and leading research uptake across Ethiopia, Ghana and Kenya.
Principal responsibilities:
- Work closely with the Principal Investigator to plan and co-ordinate study activities and research uptake.
- Co-ordinate a stakeholder analysis exercise across countries and support country teams with research uptake plans.
- Work closely with communications officer to maximise project impact.
- Prepare activity reports and co-ordinate preparation of financial reports for quarterly reporting to the funder.
- Lead for safeguarding training and development of safeguarding procedures.
- Responsible for ethics protocol submission and processes linked to ethical approval and ethical conduct of the study
- Organise weekly team meetings.
- Support the research co-ordinator/assistants to prepare for field activities, including planning staff activities, utilisation of cars and financial resources.
- Line management of research co-ordinator, research assistants, field co-ordinators, data collectors and other field staff.
- Work closely with the data manager to ensure implementation of all standardised operating procedures for quality data collection and management.
- Contribute to qualitative and quantitative data analysis.
- Lead the drafting of manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication.
- Liaise with local and international stakeholders to support engagement in the studies.
- Involvement in research dissemination activities.
- Additional tasks as directed by the Head of the Center or study investigators.
