Mercy Corps Ethiopia would like to invites competent and interested candidates for the following positions.

Position 1: Market System Development Officer-Livestock/Crop

Location: Jijiga, Somali

Position Status: Full-time Regular

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Provided technical facilitation support in the area of responsibilities for MSD activities to ensure the planned activists are implemented timely and with required deliverable quality.
  • Facilitate and coordinates markets systems assessment, organizing validation workshops and stakeholder platforms/events in in collaboration with MSD specialists and Coordinators across the cluster.
  • Facilitate capacity building efforts for market actors (i.e. private, public) on the MSD approaches, identification of the market system opportunities/constraints through conducting continues system analysis, develop approaches/modalities to support the establishment and/or expansion of the high potential small and medium scale private business enterprises in markets areas focused on last mile service delivery, access to livestock/agricultural inputs, support the delivery of market based animal health inputs, feed/fodder, agricultural inputs through market actors to targeted communities, facilities stimulating destocking and other related under RiPA component areas;
  • Facilities the development of short-term strategies and its implementation linkages creation between market actors (i.e., training providers, technology providers, inputs suppliers, producers, traders, processors, cooperatives and other related) to improve outreaches in the target community;
  • Engage in regular field visits to assess the activities implementation progress, give technical advises/mentor, and provide feedback(s) for further improvement.
  • Closely work with supervisor and M&E team during the development of monitoring tools/measuring indicators, milestones development, and monitoring/ reporting of output and outcome in his/her area assigned.
  • Ensures the program properly captures, documented and updated relevant information in Intensified and Sustained Pastoral and Agro-Pastoral Production and Marketing of RiPA;
  • In collaboration with cluster MSD team, work to build and maintain close relationships with key government partners and local implementers;
  • Represent Mercy Corps professionally in cluster areas as to bring credit and to maintain its humanitarian and development mission;
  • Compile and submit regular updates/reports (weekly, monthly and quarterly); and
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree in the areas: Animal/plant science, Economics, Agricultural Economics, Rural Development, Agribusiness, Marketing, and other related subjects.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in private sector and/or NGOs working focused on MSD (facilitation and providing technical supports), agribusiness and/or financial services.
  • Good understanding on the Markets4Poor approach and Markets development facilitation including coaching, relationship building, communicating, entrepreneurialism/business understanding and innovating.
  • Experiences in supporting privet sector lead business enterprises in pastoral/ agro-pastoral settings, providing business development supports, industries (public and private), institutions and stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of participatory analyses, action and results processing.
  • Experience/exposures to the location/region he/she applied for.
  • Knowledge of Sphere standards and other training in humanitarian response preferred.
  • Knowing the local language of position applied is required (e.g., Applicant interested to works in Somali region should know Somali language)

Position 2: Driver

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Operate MC vehicles as assigned by supervisor.
  • Maintain vehicle log-sheets in accordance with MC policies/regulations;
  • Check the vehicle conditions after each trip/routinely – report needs and problems to transport management;
  • Adhere to all safety and communication protocols as advised by Mercy Corps and supervisor;
  • Responsible for the safekeeping of all vehicle equipment, tools, first aid kits, spares etc.;
  • Keep the vehicle ready, clean and on standby – ready for use at all times;
  • Assist, as required, with logistics in the office and guesthouse daily workloads;
  • Cooperate and be of assistance to staff and visitors – assist in troubleshooting potential problems during daily business;
  • Report all maintenance needs of the vehicle to transport management on a regular basis;
  • Undertake field assignments as assigned;
  • Adherence to all MC policies and procedures as outlined in MC policies and procedure manuals;
  • Conduct himself/herself both professionally and personally in such a manner as to bring credit to Mercy Corps and to not jeopardize its humanitarian mission in country of operation;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • 12 grade complete and equivalent 
  • 3rd Grade or above Valid Driving License.
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience as a Driver preferably in an International NGO.
  • Experience in repairing Vehicles (Auto bag round) is an advantage.
  • Ability to communicate in both local language & English languages and knowledge the area is preferred.
  • Knowledge of routes, duty stations, project areas, the NGO and diplomatic community is required.

Position 3: Livestock Trade Corridor Coordinator – JIGJIGA

General Position Summary:

 S/he will be the primary relationship holder with all private sector partners within the corridor and lead the establishment of Corridor Working Groups that partner with regional leaders to co-develop Corridor Upgrading and Investment Plans.  S/He will also identify or facilitate the formation of relevant industry associations that increase the voice and participation by livestock-relevant MSMEs. S/He will also coordinate with RLP Program Managers, Officers and Advisors to organise training events, identify learnings and successes for documention and sharing MSD/PSE best practices, support development or adaptation of tools and guidance documents, identify and support markets-related research activities, lead stakeholder and technical knowledge sharing events, and liaising with relevant stakeholder networks, and local partners/institutions.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field, such as Business, Economics, Entrepreneurship or similar; Master’s degree in Business, Economics or Agri-business or other related field preferred. 
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience implementing entrepreneurship, private sector engagement, market systems development, or investment/incubation interventions. If having a Bachelor’s degree, ideal candidate will have minimum of 5 years experience implementing PSE/MSD interventions.
  • Demonstrated experience working, partnering with, and brokering PPPs or B2B partnerships with private businesses of diverse sizes including national and mulit-national firms.
  • Preference for candidates with experience working in or owning businesses or social enterprises.
  • Experience coordinating multiple activities, developing synergies and creating opportunities for collaboration.
  • Demonstrated experience in stakeholder relationship cultivation and management, driving partnership agreements, and strengthening B2B coordination for achieving program goals.
  • Demonstrated commitment to local capacity building and the ability to engage local stakeholders in project design and implementation.
  • The position requires a candidate with excellent communication skills, a relationship builder, Innovator, a coach and a political economist.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with the MS Office software (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint) required.
  • Persuasive written and oral communication in English, including report writing; competency in a relevant local language (Somali) is beneficial.
  • Experience in the V Corridor preferred.
