What are common scams in India?
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!I was recently in Agra and in my opinion, it is the scam capital of India.
I stayed for 4 days and saw half a dozen scams being pulled on me.
Millions of people come here to see the great Taj Mahal and believe me, it is really a great monument. So it is natural many genius scams have popped up here, like weeds.
I’ll mention one such scam because in my opinion, it is the most unethical scam and caused a lot of anxiety and fear in me.
As I walked outside Agra Cantt railway station I was surrounded by people offering me three wheeler services. I ignored all of them and kept walking. While I was trying to book Ola Bike taxi, one chap got real close to me and kept at it.
I finally asked him what it would cost to reach Taj Mahal just to be polite. He asked where I was staying. I told him Freedom Hostel which was around 2 Km from Taj Mahal, on the village side. He told me not to stay there as he has confirmation that there might be riots in Agra within this week.
I was completely baffled. What riots, I asked him. He said due to Delhi elections and NRC protest, there will be Hindu-Muslim riots and it is not safe to stay 2 Km outside Taj Mahal. Is that so, I asked him.
Yes, sir, he said, I will take you to a hotel which is just 100m from Taj Mahal. A lot of police security is there. You’ll be safe.
My mind went into 4th gear and started thinking hard. But instead of giving me a few minutes to think, the scammer kept pushing hard. That’s when I sensed that there was a fly in the ointment (daal me kuch kaala hai.)
I nearly fell for this genius yet unethical scam. My gut told me not to trust this guy. I have travelled a lot and 99.99% people everywhere are kind and helpful.
And I was right. Agra is an amazing city with lots of culture and history and I felt incredibly safe. I even asked my hostel employees if there could be riots here. They laughed at me as if I was joking.
Please do not fall for such opportunistic scams. People will do anything to make a quick buck off of tourists. Just take your time and also listen to your gut instinct.
Let others know about this. Please share.
